When Greg Dunn finished his Ph.D. in neuroscience at Penn in 2011, he bought himself a sensory deprivation tank as a graduation present. The gift marked a major life transition, from the world of science to a life of meditation and art.

Now a full-time artist living in Philadelphia, Dunn says he was inspired in his grad-student days by the spare beauty of neurons treated with certain stains. The Golgi stain, for example, will turn one or two neurons black against a golden background. ”It has this Zen quality to it that really appealed to me,” Dunn said.

Obit of the Day: Illinois’ 1st Female Chief Justice

Mary Ann McMorrow lived a life of firsts. She was the first woman to graduate from the Loyola University (Chicago) School of Law in 1953 - where she was elected class president. She was the first Cook County State’s Attorney to try felony cases - although her supervisor wouldn’t let her argue before the Illinois Supreme Court because of her gender. She was the first woman elected to the Cook County Circuit Court bench in 1976. Ten years later she was the first woman chosen by voters as a judge on the Illinois Appellate Court.

And she only continued to succeed. In 1992 she won election to the Illinois State Supreme Court., the first woman to earn a seat on Illinois’ highest judicial body. A decade later she would become the head of the Illinois judiciary when she won the 2002 election for Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice - the first woman to lead any branch of Illinois government.

When Mrs. McMorrow was sworn in as Chief Justice she said, “I am the 115th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Illinois. You will notice after I take off my robe that I am the only one of the 114 chief justices who preceded me that wears a skirt.”

Mary Ann McMorrow died on Saturday, February 23 at the age of 83.

Abandoned Village of Ukivok on King Island. Abandoned for nearly four decades, Ukivok is one of Alaska’s ghost villages hovering precariously on a rocky cliff facing the Bering Sea on King Island. Remains of village buildings are perched on poles standing eerily on the unforgiving terrain.

This is a real image taken by the robotic spacecraft Cassini of Saturn eclipsing the sun (via).

Amazing. There is a little blue dot on the left side of the image just above the bright main rings. That is Earth, approximately a billion miles away.

The CDC wants you to know that anal sex has gotten really popular among heterosexuals

According to the National Survey of Family Growth, which surveyed thousands of people between the ages of 15 and 44 in 2006-2008, anal sex is really popular with heterosexuals. 44 percent of straight men report having anal sex at least once in their lives, and 36 percent of straight women do too. Though more straight men than women were enjoying anal sex, women were enjoying gay sex more. Twice as many women (12%) reported having homosexual sex at least once in their lifetimes compared with men (5.8%).

File this research under stuff we already know, duh.
